If Plain Feels Too Plain | The Herringbone Fisherman Cap

When choosing a fisherman cap, plain ones feel a little dull and patterned ones feel too loud, so you end up going back to your usual one. Does that sound familiar? Because it has no brim, the hat alone can sometimes seem to stand apart from your face. The Herringbone Fisherman Cap we introduce here has a herringbone weave, which gives it an in-between look that is "neither patterned nor plain." Made of a light fabric combining rayon and linen, it is at its best in spring and summer and can be worn all year round.
QUICK ANSWER
The Herringbone Fisherman Cap uses the shading of its herringbone weave to keep a brimless cap from looking flat, while keeping a calm look close to a plain one. With a shallow design of approx. 13cm in wearing depth and an adjuster, it is easy to fine-tune to your head circumference.

What is herringbone (sugiaya-ori)?
Herringbone weave, called sugiaya-ori in Japanese, is a technique in which the way the warp and weft interlace is reversed in a V shape as the weaving proceeds, so that light and dark tones appear depending on how the light falls. Rather than printing a pattern, the shading comes from the weave itself, giving an in-between look that is neither plain nor patterned. From a distance it looks plain, and up close you notice the weave: that is what makes this fabric interesting.
A shallow, brimless shape and how it feels to wear
Because the fisherman cap has no brim at the front, it keeps the area around the face clean and the hat is less likely to stand apart on its own. On the other hand, a plain one can look flat, but the herringbone weave adds shading so the look does not become monotonous. The wearing depth is a slightly shallow approx. 13cm, so it sits neatly even when your hair is tied up.
Light rayon × linen, and an adjuster
The outer fabric is rayon 65% and linen 35%. Combining the crispness of linen with the smoothness of rayon, it is both light and breathable. Herringbone is often thought of as a wool fabric for autumn and winter, but this cap is a light piece made with spring and summer in mind. Size: one size (approx. 57–60cm), fine-tuned to your head circumference with the rear adjuster.

DESIGN STORY
The background and thinking behind the design
This is an original design and shape. The fisherman cap was already one of our signature shapes in store, but with only plain versions, the only clues for choosing were material and color. Yet with a pattern, the season and the clothes you can wear it with get decided first. We turned to herringbone weave as a fabric to fill that gap, and reworked the cap in a light blend of rayon and linen.
Put simply
"Sugiaya-ori" is a weave in which thin diagonal lines run side by side, alternating direction. Because it looks like the bones of a fish, it is called herringbone in English. It is easier to choose if you think of it as an in-between pattern: more character than plain, but less loud than checks or stripes.

STYLING
What to wear it with, and styling
The shading of herringbone is easy to pair with both simple and more elaborate clothes. The hat does not stand apart on its own; it blends into the whole outfit, yet on a closer look the texture of the weave makes a difference.
- With a plain T-shirt, the herringbone weave becomes a moderate accent so a simple outfit does not look monotonous.
- With a linen shirt or jacket, the linen textures echo each other for a relaxed, grown-up casual feel.
- With denim or wide pants, it is easy to lean toward a modern workwear look with a vintage feel.
It comes in 2 colors, Black and Natural, so choosing according to the colors in your wardrobe makes coordinating easier.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does herringbone look out of season in spring and summer?
This fabric is rayon and linen, not wool, so it looks light and fits spring and summer. The woven pattern itself is not tied to a season, so depending on the color you choose, you can keep wearing it into early autumn without it looking out of place.
Does a brimless hat make my face look round?
The fisherman cap is designed with a shallow wearing depth, so it covers less of your face and is less likely to emphasize its outline. The herringbone weave creates shading, which also softens any flat impression.
I am worried about the size. Can I try it on?
It is one size (approx. 57–60cm), adjustable with the rear adjuster, but how it feels depends on the shape of your head. At our own store in Kawaramachi, Kyoto, 京都の帽子屋 Fab (Kyoto no Boushiya Fab), you can check by actually trying it on.
