[Behind the Design] How the Uradera Cap Came to Be: A Hat with the Feel of Uradera-dori, Kyoto

"Why is this cap called 'Uradera'?"
We have been asked this more and more often, so today let us share a little of "the story behind the design".

This cap is embroidered with "Uradera". In fact, it is the name of the street where our store is.
A small backstreet just off the busy downtown area of Shijo, Kyoto. The name of that street is "Uradera-dori".

It is right in the middle of a tourist area, yet somehow quiet, with a calm atmosphere.
If you stop for a moment, you might hear a temple bell or students laughing.
It is a place full of that kind of "everyday Kyoto".

That is why, when we decided to name a hat after this neighborhood, the word "Uradera" came to mind naturally.

The "Uradera" lettering is stylish, and
we went through many samples, adjusting the balance each time.

The Uradera Cap is "a little deeper" and has "a longer brim" than our other caps.
This is no accident: it is a shape we arrived at after trying it on many times and revising it again and again.

All of our staff shared their views: "a bit deeper", "we want shade down to the chin", "let's make it a shape that doesn't blow off easily".
It is our "original shape", finally completed after a lot of effort.

Black, Gray × Black, Mocha × Beige and Blue Denim.
We thought long and hard about each color, too.

• Black is a go-to color that goes with any outfit.
• Blue Denim is casual, yet somehow calm.
• Mocha and Gray work as an accent in your outfit.

We chose each one so that it blends naturally with the wearer's "everyday clothes"

The material is 100% cotton. The reason is simple:
we want you to keep wearing it through spring, summer, autumn and winter.

We also considered wool and polyester, but in the end chose cotton for its feel on the skin and good breathability.
It is a material you can live with for a long time.

From start to finish, we design it "picturing the faces of the people who will pick up this cap".

We would be happy if, through this hat, a little bit of "Kyoto" could be part of many people's days.

Many people may feel that choosing a hat is somehow difficult.
But the Uradera Cap is a "gentle hat" that we especially want those people to try.

Not too special, not too ordinary.
We would be happy if it could be something that makes you think, "somehow, this feels just right".

With a little of the air of Kyoto and our thoughts put into it, we hope this cap
can quietly be part of your everyday life.
